Try not to worry about your gear

Look, on the one hand, you should care about these foppish, gear-y things. On the other hand, just play your music with the gear you have and have fun and speak/play/sing your experience, and use your art to help yourself and others like you to survive your condition. If at some point in the future you can afford a new batter head for your kick or new strings or new reeds or new hair for your bow or whatever, by all means buy them and put them on and tune them up. If you can afford to have somebody help you maintain the instruments of your craft, do so. If you cannot, keep expressing your experience using the means you currently have at your disposal. Someone crucially needs to hear your voice, and values your contribution to the world, and more critically, to their personal struggle because you reflect their experience and your survival may model their survival.
